JBU On-Campus Housing Rules

The following policies are part of our agreement with JBU. As guests of the university, all NITOC attendees staying in on-campus housing (suites and dorms) are expected to abide by these rules throughout the duration of their stay. Parents and/or chaperones are responsible for the conduct of minors in their care. Please read these and refer to them as necessary.

Alcohol
• No alcohol is permitted on campus.

Appliances
• Coffee makers and blenders are the only electrical food prep appliances permitted in rooms.
No crockpots, electric skillets, microwaves, or other cooking appliances of any kind are permitted to be brought on campus.
• Irons should have an automatic-off feature. Ironing must not be done on a bed or the carpeting.
Mini-refrigerators (maximum size of 4.0 cubic feet) are permitted to be brought into the dorm rooms and suites.
• To avoid potential safety hazards, all electrical appliances must have “UL” approval.

Building Access
• Please enter and leave the buildings by the main lobby doors. Crawling on/over the roof or through the windows or using the fire exits is prohibited except in the case of fire. Violations will be subject to discipline and a $100 fine.

Bicycles, Roller Blades, Skates, Skateboards
• Please do not bring bicycles, skateboards, skates, etc. onto the grounds of JBU. Non-students are not allowed to use these items on campus.

Candles, Incense, Open Flames
• Candles (including birthday candles), open flames, and incense are not permitted in the residence halls, due to fire safety regulations.

Fire Hazards
• Containers that contain any flammable materials/liquids are considered fire hazards and are not permitted in the residence halls.

Fire Safety
• Evacuation routes are posted in each room or suite.
• All residence halls are equipped with fire protection devices including smoke detectors, emergency lights, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and exit lights.
• Tampering with, or misuse of any fire protection device will result in immediate disciplinary action and up to a $200 fine.
• Tampering with or disabling a smoke detector will result in a $50 fine.

Furniture
• Each room is equipped with university furniture, which can be moved within the room but must be used in the way it was designed.
• This furniture is not to be moved from your room, and must be in the same condition (exactly) when you check out.

Laundry Service
• Laundry service is available through coin-operated washing machines and dryers located in each residence hall.
• You are responsible for furnishing your own laundry detergent.

Loss and Theft Liability
• John Brown University assumes no responsibility for any loss or damage to personal possessions resulting from theft, fire, power outages, or other disasters. Guests are urged to take all possible precautions to protect their belongings (including locking the door, proper surge protection for electronics, and taking valuable personal belongings with you).

Maintenance Requests
• All maintenance needs should be reported to the NITOC On-Campus Housing Coordinator, who is the point person working with JBU for our on-campus needs. Please do not contact JBU Facilities Services personnel directly.
• Any emergency repairs such as water leaks should be reported immediately, as well as smoke detector batteries or light bulbs as needed.
• Maintenance personnel will announce their presence on dorm halls; however, residents are asked to be appropriately dressed outside their rooms in the dorms.

Quiet Hours
• “Quiet hours” are between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. the next morning. During these hours voices, electronic devices, and other noise should be kept to a minimum.
• Please respect these times so that resident competitors and judges can get a reasonable amount of undisturbed prep time and/or rest. ☺

Refrigerators
Mini-refrigerators (maximum size of 4.0 cubic feet) are permitted to be brought into the dorm rooms and suites.

Smoking Policy
• JBU prohibits smoking anywhere on campus. JBU is a tobacco free campus.

Visitation
• Due to the mixed-gender nature of the campus housing facilities, entry into a dorm room or suite occupied by those of the opposite gender is prohibited unless all those present are immediate family members, or the Responsible Party for that dorm room or suite is present.

NOTE: Disregard for these Rules or the Terms of Agreement may result in a fine and/or expulsion from on-campus housing.
